Healthy Lake Winona will begin it’s Adopt a Storm Drain initiative this Friday 9/11/2015 when its first volunteer group will begin stenciling in downtown Winona. Bluff Country Coop will be stenciling storm drains near second and Johnson streets beginning Friday at 2 pm. Look for orange safety cones and neon safety vests as the group kicks off the initiative, one of many being coordinated by Healthy Lake Winona, a group of Winona citizens (volunteers) dedicated to improving the water quality of Lake Winona. Part of the City’s storm drain management plan is to mitigate or reduce sediment, phosphorous, and other pollutant loads to Lake Winona, listed by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) as an impaired waterway. Earlier in the year the group coordinated efforts to remove invasive plant species from around the lake, and was instrumental in establishing a city wide rain garden initiative with grants from the city of Winona. Other efforts include a water testing and sampling program along the Gilmore Creek watershed and into Lake Winona which is being spearheaded by the St. Mary’s University biology department.
