Pleasant Valley in Winona, Minnesota has been selected as a Demonstration Neighborhood in the Lawns to Legumes program!
In 2019, Minnesota passed legislation setting aside approximately $900,000 to assist homeowners in the effort to install trees, wildflowers, and other native plantings on their properties. The Lawns to Legumes program aims to protect at-risk pollinators including the Minnesota state bee, the Federally Endangered Rusty Patched Bumblebee. A select group of homeowners in Pleasant Valley in and near Winona will be able to get 90% of their native plant project paid for with the grant! Projects will be reimbursable through the local non-profit organization Healthy Lake Winona. This corridor connects the City of Winona to the bluff lands in the Pleasant Valley Watershed. Head over to the Pleasant Valley Pollinator Corridor Project website to learn more, find out if you are eligible for a grant, and apply! Funding available through 2021.
Lake Winona Lakeshore Restoration Project
You might have seen a floating barrier of coir logs on the north side of the east Lake Winona beginning in early August 2017. This barrier was constructed of invasives (mainly buckthorn and honeysuckle shrubs) wrapped in burlap and is part of a larger lake shore restoration plan which will protect future plantings of natives. Healthy Lake Winona, the City of Winona, the Winona County Soil and Water Conservation District, Winona County, Winona State University, and St. Mary's university are all partnering on this plan.
The work is being done primarily by volunteers with some $3500 in financial support from the City of Winona. Healthy Lake Winona is accepting donations to make up for the rest of the cost- about $3000. Details on how you can contribute are noted to the right. We've also posted some videos to show you how the work was done. You can also read more in an article from the Winona Post here. |
